Klappentext

In 1944, as World War II is raging across Europe, fifteen-year-old Jack Raab dreams of being a hero. Leaving New York City, his family, and his boyhood behind, Jack uses a false I.D. and lies his way into the U.S. Air Force. From their base in England, he and his crew fly twenty-four treacherous bombing missions over occupied Europe. The war is almost over and Hitler near defeat when they fly their last mission -- a mission destined for disaster. Shot down far behind enemy lines, Jack is taken prisoner and sent to a German POW camp, where his experiences are more terrifying than anything he'd ever imagined.

I was required to read this book for my 8th grade unit about WWII. At first, I thought, Oh, no, a book about war and dying and noooo I don't want to read it. But I had to, so I tried to keep an open mind about it. It was one of the best books I've ever read. It was truly moving. The last page really got me.... It was beautifully written, documenting the spiritual journey the young boy Jack Raab makes. This new angle on war made visible the ugly, horrible truths: war isn't about being a hero, it's not about killing the enemy, it's not what you think. It made me see deeper into the true meaning of war. Wonderful read. It has some "colorful" language and some gruesome scenes but it's definately worth a look.

This is a good story which is well told. It is fairly realistic, although there are several technical errors in the story (which would be spotted only by USAAF veterans and enthusiasts). One word of caution: this book is promoted for young adults and youth, but there was a surprising amount of profanity in the text. Realistic, but perhaps not suitable for young readers. I bought the book intending to give it to my son, but decided against it after discovering the bad language.
